Cozumel Guide

Xcaret • Xel-Há • Garrafón

Xcaret
(pronounced shká - rette)
Mexico's answer to DisneyWorld.
Book your Dolphin Encounter early!
Xcaret is an amazing, wonderous place to spend the day. I visit almost every time I go to Cozumel, because there is always something new to see and do.

One of my favorite things to do is to float down the underwater river from one end of the park to the other. The water is very cold and refreshing. And believe me, you will appreciate it so much especially in the summer months when the heat and humidity is so high! You get a life vest and can rent mask, flippers, and snorkel (we bring our own) if you want, they have bags to put your personal belongings in (we carry waterproof wallets with us) just before you enter the water. When you reach the very end of the river, you pick up your bag!

When you first step into the water, you almost want to jump out it seems so cold, but after a few minutes, you adjust. The good news is you can get in and out at many points along the way. Stop and have lunch, visit an exhibit, get back in and float on down. And you pass through these amazing caverns, alternating the dark with the brilliant sunlight. The water is crystal clear and you can see the marine life without using a mask because it is so clear.

Swim with the dolphins, watch jaguars and panthers (did you know that panthers are the opposite of albinos and can be found in all cat species?), gaze in wonder at millions of butterflies, snorkel in the lagoons, relax on the beach, laugh at the dozens of tanks of baby sea turtles (they have a huge hatching and release program at Xcaret), visit some old Mayan ruins.

You can even ride up the air-conditioned tall tower that spins so you can see the entire Mayan Riviera coast! Stay for dinner and a show. I sent my brother and his wife to Xcaret, including the show, when they were down there and they loved it!

Getting to Xcaret is very easy. You can take the ferry from San Miguel over to Playa and either take a taxi or buy tickets for a bus. The taxi is more convenient and they are always waiting at the end of the evening because of all the visitors who go to Xcaret daily.
Xel-Há
(pronounced shell-ha')
A smaller version of Xcaret, close to Tulum
Xel-Há is 76 miles south of Cancun, which means it's about 40 miles south of Playa del Carmen. Being only about 8 miles from Tulum means you can do both in a very active day if you really want to see outstanding Mayan ruins.

On my next visit to Cozumel, I will head to Xel-Há, if for no other reason than to take advantage of their well-known massages that you can have outside under the trees!
Garrafón
(
pronounced gar-ra-fone')
Smaller park on Isla Mujeres
I haven't experienced this park myselve yet, but if you're looking for another place to have fun, I are told this is a delightful venue. Isla Mujeres is a very small island north of Cozumel Island, closer to Cancun.

The best way to see it is to take their tour which leaves from El Embarcadero dock located next to the panoramic tower in Cancun’s hotel zone Km 4. This means taking the ferry to Playa del Carmen, and then a bus or taxi into Cancun.
