If you're like most people, the main reason you come to Cozumel is for the diving and the snorkeling. It's what Cozumel is most famous for, so if you haven't experienced either, this is an excellent place to try your hand at one or both.
At the Casa, you can snorkel right off the beach. There is a strong current that usually runs from south to north (watch the buoys before you enter as they swing with the direction of the current), so stay relatively close to shore until you get the hang of the currents. NEVER snorkel without someone with you or someone on shore watching out for you in case the current becomes too strong.
You can rent snorkel equipment at almost any dive shop in town or in our at Sand-Dollar's, located in our management office downstairs if you don't have your own. If you intend to do a lot of snorkeling, it is cheaper to rent your equipment for multiple days.
You can also snorkel in many other places. Chankanaab Marine Park has wonderful lagoons where you can snorkel very safely without fear of being dragged out by the currents. Ditto with X'caret on the mainland.
You can also ask my Management Staff where the best snorkeling is and they'll be glad to help you out.
As a diving mecca, Cozumel can't be beat.(Here's a great map of all the reefs and a description of each of them.) It is effortless diving! Drifting along with the current over the reefs, using your breath to navigate up, over, and down to them. It's simply amazing once you get the hang of it. And no swimming to find your dive boat! You simply surface and wait for your boat to come get you!
My favorite dive operator is Dive with Martin. They are located on the beach at the International Ship Cruise Pier/ Diamond Plaza, next door to La Ceiba. Email them at: DivewithMartin@gmail.com or fax at: (011 529) 872-1340 for your diving arrangements. And call them at (011 529) 872-2610 when you get in to confirm your booking.
Why do I love them so much?
1. If for no other reason, they have one of the best safety records on the island. That speaks volumes to me as a safety first diver.
2. Their dive masters are personality plus! These guys love what they do and they have as much fun as you in the water. They also look out for you and make sure that you're safe.
3. They usually leave 30 minutes earlier than any of the other dive operators. And that's wonderful for you because it means you get to the reefs first before all the divers have had a chance to disturb the sand or the fish or have to share the reefs!
4. Their boats are mostly small boats (max. of 8 divers), so you get to the reefs faster than the big "cattle" boats. You roll off the side of the boat rather than doing a giant stride (a lot safer in my book). And you get in by ladder. Their captains are competent and also enjoy what they do, which makes it a pleasant dive experience for you.
5. And Martin Aguilar, the owner, is an amazing man. He is well-known for his charitable work (http://www.islacozumel.net/services/donations/). He is a true gentleman, and will do whatever he can to make your diving experience the best you've ever had.
So if you decide to Dive with Martin, tell them "Senor Bandito" sent you (that's me). PS: Sometimes they forget and say, who? |
