Cozumel Guide

RESTAURANTS

There are hundreds of restaurants in Cozumel to choose from. I'll list a few of my favorites for you to try. Feel free to explore and try any of the restaurants you come across because I have always found the food to be excellent.

Most restauranteurs are very eager to please you. It is generally safe to eat anything in a Cozumel restaurant because the food is cleaned and prepared with filtered water and treated with a bacteriostatic agent such as microdyne. The ice cubes are also purified. Nevertheless, take certain precautions. Don't buy from street vendors and avoid fruits and vegetables that have not been cooked, pared, or washed in purified water. (The good news is that at the Casa, all our water is double or triple purified and softened so it is safe to drink right from the tap. Don't do that anywhere else!)

Prima's Trattoria
Excellent Italian food and Black Angus steaks. The owner and chef, Al Dannerman, is extremely particular about the quality and preparation of the food. He flies the Black Angus steaks in daily, for example, because he believes in using only the freshest ingredients. His staff is superb and the food is the best in town. The restaurant is on a roof top, above Roberto's Coral (wonderful gift shop) and every cabbie in town knows it. It's on Calle 3, one block in from the waterfront. It's always packed and they don't take reservations. The bar is on the ground floor, so even if it is packed, you'll be well taken care of while you wait for a table. And now, check out Al's newest and finest restaurant, the WYNSTON, next door to your Penthouse! (They will also cater directly to your door after 5PM daily).
Guido's
A good Italian restaurant, on the north side of San Miguel, on the waterfront between Calle 6 and 8. We discovered this place last year when we stayed on the north side of town. There is a tiny room in the front which faces the water if you want a view (our favorite) and then there is a larger room on the inside that is a garden. (The prosciutto with melon is delectable!) The owner is a big supporter of the local Red Cross so when you get your check, you will also be given an envelope to make a donation. I always do (I'va a long history as a Red Cross volunteer leader) because the work the Red Cross does locally helps divers regularly and local families in diasasters. More expensive than Prima's.
Pepe's Grill
Probably the oldest and most well-known restaurant in town. It is expensive, but worth every penny. We usually have one dinner here each time we come because it is so hard to resist...white linen tablecloths and napkins, sterling silver tableware, crystal wine glasses, the best and most well-dressed waiters in town, a charming local band that goes beyond mariachi music, perfect air-conditioning, a view of the ocean, and the most delectable chateaubriand we've ever had. Their Caesar Salad is prepared right in front of you, as are their cherry and banana flambés. The service is impeccable and old friends Jenne and Olga adore their coffee (they are coffee fanatics). You cannot miss at Pepe's!
Pancho's Backyard
This is a hard to find place because it is located in the back within a well-known gift shop, Los Cinco Soles, on the north side of town, between Calle 8 and 10. Traditional Mexican food served in a lovely garden setting with great service. However, bring your insect repellent because the mosquitos will devour you if you are at all tasty (and that's most everyone). Moderately expensive.
The French Quarter
You miss jambalaya and crawfish etoufée? Then come here. The owner, Mike Slaughter, is very proud of the menu and food that comes out of his kitchen. BBQ ribs are the special on Friday and Saturday nights and should not be missed. Moderately expensive. On Avenue 5.
Chedraui
Now you might think I'm a little crazy to put this down here, it's a super store for heaven's sakes! Yes, it is. But it also has a great cafeteria with wonderful food for very cheap prices. They have a wonderful bakery too. So if you want a plentiful, tasty breakfast that's a bargain, by all means, drop in to Chedraui.
